It is the only food source for Monarch butterfly larvae, and the fragrant pink blossoms attract all sorts of butterflies, bees, and even hummingbirds! Growing this plant was a must for my organic garden, so I scoured my local area and found some wild showy milkweed growing along the Weiser River in west-central Idaho. I got the seeds going in my garden, and after 2 seasons, I had milkweed galore. Now my garden has an abundance of monarchs visiting each summer, whereas I used to see maybe one monarch every 5 years, if lucky.

I am pleased to offer my fourth crop of showy milkweed seed pods! With your purchase, you will receive a generous 6-pac bag of 6 to 9 seed pods that are bursting with 100-200 seeds, each attached to silky soft flyer fluff. There are multiple uses for all these parts... The seeds can be planted, the dried pods can be used for decoration (think wreaths and fall displays), and the fluff can be used as stuffing or can even be spun into yarn! You can also opt to just scatter the fluffy seeds into the wind and see where that takes them (this is much fun for kids)!

Some helpful tips for growing these amazing wildflowers: First, plant them only where you want a giant patch of milkweeds to grow. One healthy plant will spread through its amazing tap root, so don't plant this in your normal vegetable garden bed or it will take over. Also, the seeds need a period of cold, called stratification, prior to germinating. You can either sow these seeds in the winter, or you can store them in your fridge for 3 months at 40 degrees prior to planting them in the spring. When I planted my seeds in the fall, they spent a winter under snow. In the spring, I made sure they were in full sun and had plenty of water their first 2 years. The first year plant is only about 6 inches tall, but by the second year, the thick stems can grow from 1.5 to 6 feet tall! The pink flowers are gorgeous, looking like little starbursts, and a few weeks later, the seed pods form into 2 to 4 inch lengths, each holding 100-200 seeds.

It takes 5 or 6 generations of monarchs to complete one round trip from Mexico (or from one spot in California) up to Canada and back. If you see monarchs in your patch, protect them and their larvae from pesticides or destruction so that they can be on their way to complete this most amazing journey.

Specs:

* Please Note - I can only ship these seeds to U.S. locations due to Customs limitations

* You will receive 1 re-useable green nylon bag measuring 4x6 inches holding 6 to 9 milkweed pods

* Seeds were grown in 2025

* These seeds are being cold stratified during the 2025/2026 winter so they are ready to plant in spring or summer!

All sales of my garden goods support animal rescue and wildlife conservation.
