In Vietnamese they are known as the Ot Hiem (devil pepper)

This Chile is quite rare and can live for 15-20 years in the wild tropical environments and overwinters much better than most peps here in the north. I grew these in 17 gallon tubs and they really took off when the Michigan summer heated up. The plants reached almost 4 feet tall here and were quite different and striking in appearance. The leaves are pretty much mid green until they shoot up, then they become a hazy olive green color maturing into a deep blue green with a gray silver tinge around the edges. The fuzz on the leaves plays tricks with your eyes depending on the distance you view them from. Mid September I did a double take walking by...Damn, those got frosted, nah only the silvery fuzz catching the sun just right looking like ice crystals.

The pods range from 2-3" long by 1/2" wide, grow upward, and ripen from green to jet black and finally fluorescent red and you will see all of the plant and fruit colors combining at the same time later in the growing season which makes for a very attractive plant.

How hot are they? Well, here in the north they are about 30,000 on the Scoville heat index, but can exceed 100,000+ in the southern climes.

Uses? Great for salsas, marinades for beef and chicken, or simmered with tomatillos, tomatoes and onions for a spicy sauce. I dried mine and crushed it into powder/flakes. I sampled them before writing this and they have a licorice/bay leaf/ black pepper/herb heat. Very distinguishing flavor. Heat-wise after drying, I would say 3-5 times hotter than a Jalapeno.

Written notes from zone 5b observations:
Start seeds 7-9 weeks before last expected frost. (Do not use peat pots)
Days to maturity from transplanting- green fruit 80-85 days
Days to maturity from transplanting- black fruit 90-95 days
Days to maturity from transplanting- red fruit 100-115 days

Notes from 2022: Bumper crop for these this year. 3 plants grown in three 5 gallon Subway pickle buckets, 6 plants grown in two 17 gallon tubs. The shathead deer somehow managed to slather their big fat bovine grappling tongue in between the wires and violated two of the plants apparently growing a bit close to their protective cage, but other than that they did outstanding and I spent a lot of time picking ripe pods.

The only C. Annuum fuzzy variety that looks like a familiar C. Pubescens plant.
A very unique pepper that I will be growing again and again. And, yes I know it is AKA Goats Weed.

Ships for free via USPS first class mail the same or next business day.

Thanks for considering zuluseeds.
My best, J.
